Central Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy
In December 2004 the Queensland Government, in partnership with local government, committed to developing the Central Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy, a long term water supply strategy for the region.
Following the release of a draft strategy in December 2005, and a period of public consultation, the Queensland Government released the Central Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy in December 2006.
Secure water supplies are a part of every aspect of Central Queensland life. Careful planning is essential if we are to sustainably manage the area’s water supply to meet future needs.
A number of important strategic water supply planning processes have been completed throughout the region in recent years but have generally been undertaken at a local level only. As demand on limited water resources grows, we need to consider more efficient linkages and supply strategies at a regional level.
Our strategy area covers the Fitzroy Basin and nearby coastal catchments. The major regional centres include Gladstone, Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Emerald.
The strategy aims to meet the needs of urban, industrial/mining and agricultural water users and achieve optimum social, environmental and economic outcomes.
