Water monitoring

 

The Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) collects, manages and delivers data on the quantity and quality of fresh water in the state’s streams and aquifers, as the basis for water resource planning and water management activities.

How water is monitored

NRW's water monitoring program collects accurate data on the quality and quantity of the state's fresh water resources. The program operates under a certified quality management system to ensure public confidence in the data and in the department’s water planning and management activities.

Current water streamflow data for activities such as event-based water management under water resource plans and resource operations plans is now available from NRW's water monitoring network.

WaterShed, NRW's surface water data archive includes gauging station information, streamflow data summaries and chemical analyses of water samples.

Supporting water resource planning

NRW and water licence holders conduct water monitoring and assessment activities to support water resource planning. Each water resource plan (WRP) and resource operations plan (ROP)specifies details of the monitoring requirements for the related catchment.

The Annual water statistics report includes data on Queensland’s water consumption, rainfall, stream flows and water resource planning.
