Land and regional planning

The department is responsible for providing the policy and technical information necessary to assess and evaluate the state's land resources, and to plan for their responsible management and use.

To do this, it uses information based on agricultural science, earth and natural sciences, urban and regional planning, geography, landscape analysis, valuation and land administration, and information from the Land Resources Information System.

Land planning studies

Land planning studies determine future use for state land. This process takes into account the area’s natural resources, sets goals and considers submissions from stakeholders, taking into account state, regional and local planning strategies and policies and the object of the Land Act.

Good quality agricultural lands

To maintain the productivity and efficiency of rural industries, it is necessary to protect agricultural land from unnecessary development. Good quality agricultural land is a finite national and state resource that must be conserved and managed for the longer term.
