European Satellite Navigation Competition 2008: Australian Challenge

European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC)

The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is Europe's largest networking opportunity for the satellite navigation industry, involving 13 regions in 2008.

Entries for the Australian Challenge have now closed and judging has commenced.

The competition is designed to source commercially viable ideas for applications and products that use satellite navigation technology and provide the opportunity for innovative ideas to be internationally recognised.

The Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) is the Queensland Government's lead agency for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology and infrastructure.

As the lead agency, NRW is coordinating the ESNC 2008: Australian Challenge. In conjunction with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry, NRW is promoting Queensland's expertise in the GNSS industry.

About the Australian Challenge

Australia is the first region outside of Europe to take part in this prestigious competition, which recognises the transformation of satellite navigation products from a niche industry into a global applications market.

The competition, now in its fifth year, comes under the auspices of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. It is organised by the Anwendungszentrum, the GNSS Applications Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

Judging

In September 2008, an expert judging panel consisting of representatives from across government, industry and academia, in Australia and New Zealand, will choose the Australian Challenge winner.

Judging panel experts from each region and the expert judging panel of the special topic sponsors (representatives from the special topic sponsors) will select the regional finalists and the special topic winners.

Entrants based in Australia should note they were not eligible to enter the European Space Agency and European GNSS Supervisory Authority special topic prizes.

The Australian Challenge winner will be notified by 15 September 2008.

On 18–19 September 2008, the head of the Australian Challenge expert judging panel will join all other judging panel heads in France to select the overall winner—the Galileo Master—from the regional finalists and special topic winners.

On 21 October 2008, the international awards ceremony will be held in Munich, Germany. The prizes for the Galileo Master, the regional winners and the special topic winners will be awarded and the winning ideas presented to the public at the official state reception at the Munich Residence.

In November 2008, NRW will host a regional awards ceremony in Brisbane, Queensland to publicly announce the Australian Challenge winner.

NRW is the agency for Global Navigation Satellite System technology and infrastructure, through its core business role in surveying and the maintenance of geodetic information. NRW is working with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry and Trade Queensland to raise awareness of Queensland's burgeoning GNSS technology industry and have it recognised as an industry of international significance. A Queensland Government coordinated Australian Challenge region in the ESNC is a critical component of this initiative.
