European Satellite Navigation Competition 2008: Australian Challenge

The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is Europe's largest networking opportunity for the satellite navigation industry, involving 13 regions in 2008.
Entries for the Australian Challenge were open from 1 May 2008 – 31 July 2008, and 16 entries were received in this inaugural year of the Australian Challenge.
The ESNC is designed to source commercially viable ideas for applications and products that use satellite navigation technology, and provide the opportunity for innovative ideas to be internationally recognised.
The Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) is the Queensland Government's lead agency for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology and infrastructure.
As the lead agency, NRW coordinated the ESNC 2008: Australian Challenge. In conjunction with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry and Trade Queensland, NRW continues to promote Queensland's expertise in the GNSS industry.
About the Australian Challenge
Australia, along with Taiwan, were the first regions outside of Europe to take part in this prestigious competition in 2008, which recognises the transformation of satellite navigation products from a niche industry into a global applications market.
The competition, which ran for its fifth year in 2008, comes under the auspices of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. It is organised by the Anwendungszentrum, the GNSS Applications Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

On 18–19 September 2008, the head of the Australian Challenge expert judging panel joined the other judging panel heads in France to select the overall winner—the Galileo Master—from the regional finalists and special topic winners.
On 21 October 2008 the international awards ceremony was held in Munich, Germany. The prizes for the Galileo Master, regional winners and the special topic winners were awarded and the winning ideas presented to the public at this official state reception at the Munich Residence.
In November 2008, NRW hosted a regional awards ceremony in Brisbane, Queensland to publicly announce the Australian Challenge winner.

NRW is the agency for Global Navigation Satellite System technology and infrastructure, through its core business role in surveying and the maintenance of geodetic information. NRW is working with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry and Trade Queensland to raise awareness of Queensland's burgeoning GNSS technology industry and have it recognised as an industry of international significance. A Queensland Government coordinated Australian Challenge region in the ESNC is a critical component of this initiative.
