This module is aimed at both the Science and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) strands.

Using this module

This module provides a selection of activities as a basis for teachers to develop their own units of work. These units could combine activities from a range of modules and other sources.

The Activities section provides a range of different introductory, developmental and culminating activities, and resource sheets to go with them. The materials section of each activity provides links to resource sheets and fact sheets relevant to that activity.

About this module

The catchment management module has been designed for students of primary school age to demonstrate how science decisions have short- and long-term implications for the environment, communities and individuals. It will also show how living things use the resources of the earth, solar system and universe to meet their needs; and how environments are dynamic, and have living and non-living components that interact.

Students will have opportunities to:

  • investigate various aspects of water catchments
  • interpret data and draw conclusions about the health of a catchment
  • communicate decisions based on scientific evaluations within a social context.

The activities contained in this module are designed to help students understand that:

  • applications of science have been influenced by changes in social attitudes
  • the uses of science have implications for the community
  • the applications of science have immediate and long-term consequences for society
  • the earth and solar system are used differently by different communities
  • the earth, the solar system and the universe are different types of resources, which may be used for different purposes
  • the earth, solar system and universe are resources that humans use
  • the interactions that occur between living and non-living parts of the environment have consequences
  • the effects of change can be recognised in systems within living things as well as within environments
