NRW on front foot in fire prevention
12 August 2008
Department of Natural Resources and Water officers are getting on the front foot in the ongoing battle to help prevent wild fires in the Mackay region.
Staff will conduct a series of strategic controlled burns at St Helens Beach, Seaforth, Grasstree Beach and Koumala from August 18 to 22 to reduce fire hazards.
The department conducts controlled burns on Unallocated State Land (USL) at St Helens Beach and Grasstree Beach on an annual basis but is burning a small area at Seaforth and a 14ha parcel at Koumala for the first time.
Departmental Mackay-based land officer Denis Hayter said they had identified risks at Seaforth and Koumala for this round of work.
“One area is within close proximity of the township of Koumala and there are a couple of isolated houses near Seaforth that could be vulnerable,’’ Mr Hayter said.
“Work in these areas is required to reduce the risk of wildfires and the possible loss of property.’’
Mr Hayter said despite recent rain in the Mackay region, winds had dried out conditions for the burns to progress.
Signs will be displayed at prominent locations around the various towns to alert local residents of the department’s work during this time.
Mr Hayter advised residents to keep doors and windows closed during the times of burning.
Hazard signage will be placed on affected roads.
